Identifying Bacterial Leaf Spot

Bacterial Leaf Spot primarily affects tomatoes and peppers, though it can also infect other vegetables in the nightshade family.

  • Leaf Symptoms: It begins as small, water-soaked, circular spots on the undersides of leaves. As the disease progresses, these spots become dark brown to black and often develop a yellow halo.

  • Fruit Symptoms: On tomatoes, the fruit may develop small, raised, "scabby" spots that can look like bird's eyes. On peppers, these spots often appear as raised, corky areas on the surface.

  • Plant Impact: Severe infections can cause significant defoliation, which exposes the ripening fruit to sunscald and reduces the overall vigor of the plant.

3. Garden Maintenance

  • Watering Habits: Avoid overhead watering, which can splash bacteria from the soil onto the leaves. Use drip irrigation or water at the base of the plant early in the day.
