The nutritional value of hay is heavily dependent on the plant species and its maturity at the time of cutting.

Grass-Based Hays

1. Tedding

2. Raking

When the hay has reached a near-dry state, it is raked into windrows. Raking should be timed carefully; if the hay is too dry (below 35% moisture), significant leaf loss can occur, especially in legumes like alfalfa and clover. These leaves contain the highest concentration of protein and minerals.

3. Baling

Baling is the final step in field preservation. The target moisture content for dry hay is typically between 15% and 18%.


  • If too wet: The hay may heat, leading to spoilage, molds (like yeasts), or even spontaneous combustion.

  • If too dry: The forage becomes brittle, losing its nutritional density and palatability.
