  3. Lay the Main Line: Run your 1/2-inch tubing along the garden path or the length of your raised beds.

  4. Connect the Emitters: Use a hole punch to insert emitters into the main line near the base of each plant. For dense plantings like carrots or lettuce, a soaker hose woven through the bed is often more effective.

  5. Mulch the System: Apply a 2-to-4-inch layer of organic mulch (like straw) over your irrigation lines. This further regulates soil temperature and protects the tubing from sun damage.




Advanced Nutrition: The Injector System

One of the greatest advantages of a professional drip setup is the ability to use fertigation—the process of applying fertilizers through your irrigation water. Because containers and raised beds experience nutrient leaching due to frequent watering, this method ensures a steady supply of food.

By adding an injector system (like a Venturi injector) to your main line, you can use water-soluble fertilizers such as:

 


  • Balanced Formulas: All-purpose water-soluble foods for general growth.

  • Fruiting Formulas: High-phosphorus and calcium-rich blends to encourage blooms and prevent blossom-end rot in tomatoes once fruiting begins.

  • Organic Boosts: Liquid fish fertilizer or kelp meal can be injected to improve soil health and provide immediate micronutrients like magnesium for peppers.
